Video games to play as a family

That aren't Mario Kart

🥳Want to play some video games with your kids but you’re getting tired of Mario Kart? Here’s some suggestions you may not have played before!

🤪There is NOTHING wrong with Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Mario Party, or other common multiplayer “couch co-op” games. But they are also directly competitive, and not all kids (or adults) respond well to that.

🤔It can be fun to broaden your gaming horizons, especially since many of these games are more collaborative in their approach.

🔥One of my favorite things to do with games like Kirby and the Forgotten Land, or Yoshi’s Crafted World, is use it as a way of modeling my thinking and problem solving. If it isn’t clear what the objective is, I can list things I notice that we could interact with as a way of showing how we can figure things out.

😌Some of these games, particularly Untitled Goose Game and Stardew Valley, are calmer and more tranquil. Others, like Moving Out, are fun but can also be higher energy and more stressful.

🤯This is another great way of incorporating some digital literacy; if it’s been a long week, maybe you decide to play something calmer. You and your kids can check in after playing and see if the game you chose was a good fit, or if you should try something different next time.

What are your favorite family co-op games? Put them in the comments!
