Takeaways from the 2025 screen media census
👀The contrast of 3 and 4 really stood out to me. What do you think?
✅The @commonsenseorg 2025 census on child screen use came out recently and I couldn’t wait to read it (always love a good nonfiction thriller 🤣)
⚖️Overall- screen use is fairly consistent compared to the 2020 census (which was conducted pre-COVID).
🕹️Time spent gaming is up. Approximately 50% of households surveyed own a console. That said, overwhelmingly the most common game type being played are mobile games.
📚Time spent reading is down, but not for all communities! See slide 2.
😩The majority of parents are worried about the amount of time their kids use screens, and the inclusion of sexual or violent content.
🤔And yet, the majority of parents surveyed do not use control settings to limit time or content available for their children. While this is sometimes unnecessary (like for young children watching tv with an adult nearby), using settings to limit content is much easier to stop doing than to start doing. This also seems to be further evidence, however casual, that large companies like @roblox @nintendoamerica and @fortnite @apple should be streamlining and simplifying the settings setup process and even requiring it.
