5 easy things to say to promote screen time balance
And model them for yourself too
🤷🏻♂️”My kid only wants screens. How can I help them without taking them away completely?” Modeling! We model how to do everything our kids learn from birth (walking, talking, etc) so we can model screen balance too!
📺Screens ARE fun in many ways. They’re engaging, engrossing, distracting, and that can be fun and it can also be too much of a good thing. Instead of just noticing noticing the downsides or verbalizing them to kids, we can model and verbalize ideas that promote screens and body/sensory needs.
🤯This is also a great way to model screen behaviors we’d like to change for ourselves. Maybe it’s telling your kids when you’ll put your work computer away, or modeling no phones at dinner. When we model and explain these choices to our kids we are also equipping them with these skills for later in life.
🧠Just as we model habits around nutrition, or behavior, that we want our kids to follow, modeling the screen habits we want for our kids gives them a guide to follow. It also opens the door for many conversations around screens, noticing our bodies and our needs, and managing both.
